**Solent Mobility Centre Blog **# **Keeping Safe In Winter: 5 Wheelchair Safety Tips** Are you a wheelchair user in Hampshire? Check out our guide for staying safe and protected in the cold winter season!23 September 2025 2 min read As the winter season unfolds, navigating the world outdoors in a wheelchair can become increasingly difficult. It's essential to prioritise your safety during this time of year for a smooth, comfortable journey. In this blog, we'll be exploring our TOP 5 winter wheelchair safety tips, helping wheelchair users and caregivers in Hampshire alike. ## **TIP 1: Keep Warm** When the weather is chilly, pushing or maneuvering in a wheelchair can be tough, but don't let the weather hold you back! Keep your hands and body warm with gloves and a warm coat or blanket. ## **TIP 2: Keep Dry** It's important that you, your caregiver(s) and your wheelchair stay dry in the cold and damp months. Always bring a coat on rainy days or a wheelchair poncho. When you're not using a wheelchair, always ensure that it is stored somewhere dry and secure. If you get any ice or snow on your chair, make sure you remove any residue using a dry cloth to prevent rusting. ## **TIP 3: Stay Up-To-Date** Be prepared for any journey by checking the latest weather information in advance. Knowing the weather conditions will help prepare you for all your winter adventures! We also recommend that you avoid travelling on icy days if possible, as these conditions can make paths slippery. ## **TIP 4: Keep Essentials** For our next tip, we recommend preparing an emergency wheelchair kit. Although you may never need to use this kit, it could be a lifesaver if you ever find yourself in a challenging situation during the winter. We recommend that your wheelchair kit include essentials such as: snacks, water, gloves, a torch, and any other necessities you may require. ## **TIP 5: Keep Connected** Lastly, for our final tip, we recommend that you simply stay connected! When tackling the outside world in winter, it's always nicer to have a friend or family member tag along. The company is great for a chat and could lend you a hand if you run into any obstacles. If you're someone who prefers to travel solo, don't worry! We recommend that you give a trusted friend or family member a heads-up when you venture out on any wintery journeys. That way, they know you're safe and can be prepared to help if the weather starts to slow you down. You can also stay connected online too! There are plenty of online groups and forums for wheelchair users in Hampshire. These places are a great way to pick up a few extra tips for the chilly season and to meet new friends. With that, we wrap up our winter wheelchair safety tips. Remember, winter doesn't have to be a barrier to your mobility and independence. With the right preparations, you can enjoy every journey safely and comfortably.
