Buying guide

How to choose the right commode

A few quick questions will help you find a commode that suits your space, transfer needs and comfort.

1

Think about where you'll use it

Consider whether you mainly need a bedside commode, one that fits over your existing toilet, or one you can move between rooms.

2

Decide between static and wheeled

A static commode offers extra stability in one place, while a wheeled model is easier to reposition around the home.

3

Consider a drop-arm design if needed

If transferring from a wheelchair, a drop-arm commode can make sideways transfers easier.

4

Check height, width and weight capacity

Confirm the seat height, width and maximum user weight suit the person who'll be using it, for comfort and stability.

Common questions

Commodes: your questions answered

Answers to some of the questions we're asked most often about commodes.

What is a commode used for?

A commode is a free-standing chair with a removable pan, offering an alternative to the toilet for situations where bathroom access is difficult, such as overnight or for someone with limited mobility.

What's the difference between a static and a wheeled commode?

A static commode has fixed legs, offering a stable, sturdy base in one fixed position. A wheeled commode has castors, making it easier to move between rooms, which can be useful if it needs to be relocated around the home.

What is a drop-arm commode and who is it for?

A drop-arm commode has one or both armrests that can be lowered, making it easier to transfer sideways from a wheelchair without the armrest being in the way. It can be a helpful option for people who need extra support with transfers.

Can a commode be used over my existing toilet?

Some commodes, often described as 3-in-1 models, are designed to fit over an existing toilet, working as a raised toilet seat, as well as being used as a standalone commode elsewhere. It's worth checking the specific model's dimensions and design before assuming this is the case.

Am I eligible for VAT relief on a commode?

If you have a disability or a long-term illness, you may qualify for VAT relief on an eligible commode. This usually involves completing a simple eligibility declaration at checkout, with the VAT removed at the point of sale.
