Stay Safe This Autumn | 5 Falls Prevention Tips

Did you know that falls are one of the most common injuries for people aged 65 and over? Although this may seem minor, as our bodies age, a simple fall can lead to serious consequences. Here's how to stay safe this autumn.

Approximately one-third of people aged 65 and over in the UK fall at least once a year, which is around 3 million falls.

An accident that seems so minor can actually be serious, as aging bodies can't recover as quickly. This statistic may seem scary, but there are many ways to prevent falls and stay safe at home.

1) Don't Rush!

It's easy to get into the habit of rushing around, but this can lead to trips and falls if you're not careful. It's much better to take things slow and steady.

When standing up from a chair, take your time and don't instantly walk away once you're up - give your body a few seconds to adjust. Walk at your own pace; don't force yourself to speed-walk.

2) Wear Suitable Clothes

Yes, even your clothing can affect your balance and stability. Well-fitted footwear with non-slip soles can reduce the risk of tripping.

Avoid wearing long, loose clothing that could get caught under your feet. We also recommend wearing a fall alarm bracelet or pendant just in case you do fall; this little accessory can be a major lifesaver for people aged 65 and over.

3) Keep Walkways Clear

Make sure to keep common walkways clear and well-lit. If you have rugs or runners, either secure them down or put them away if you feel like you may get caught on them.

Install night lights in hallways so you can see your surroundings if you need to get up during the night. You can also get non-slip mats to place by chairs and beds for added stability.

4) Use Mobility Aids

There's no shame in needing a bit of mobility assistance; mobility aids are great at boosting your balance and confidence.

Placing grab rails in common walkways, bathrooms, and anywhere else you may need them - these provide a little extra support when moving rooms or standing up. Riser recliners are another solution that makes standing up and sitting down a breeze.

5) Keep Essentials Nearby

Lastly, keep your top essentials close. Put your medication, water, phone, and other items on a table near your bed or chair, so they're within reach when you need them.

Don't try to carry too many items, especially heavy ones, at once when moving around.
